Challenges with web analytics
Despite its great popularity, Google Analytics makes it difficult to comply with laws and regulations for many European authorities and companies. During this webinar, we will deep dive into the problems with services like Google Analytics and give you a detailed explanation to why you need to think twice before you use Google Analytics.
We will also talk about Matomo as an alternative and explain what differs from Google Analytics with pros and cons.
Finally, we will talk about how to succeed in changing tools where Tomas has helped several Swedish organizations within the public sector to change from Google Analytics to Matomo among them are the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) and the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).
About Matomo
Personal data can be a combination of data which together make it possible to identify someone. What is needed is simply an opportunity to delete and anonymize data even after it has been collected. A strong candidate as a replacement for Google Analytics is the Open Source platform Matomo (formerly Piwik). Matomo gives you as a site owner the following in relation to GDPR:
- Full ownership of your data
- Consent Support (Do not track before consent is given)
- Opt out support (stop tracking when users request it)
- Export possibilities of individual users' data
- Anonymization functions for stored data
- Deletion of individual users' data
Matomo also handles functions that can replace tools for A/B tests and heat maps such as Hotjar, by offering similar functions as plugins in Matomo. The advantages of these are that you also have full ownership of your data here.
